More than 300,000 rooftop solar systems were installed across Australia in 2024, bringing the total number to more than 4 million.
While these households and small businesses are reducing their bills by a collective $6 billion annually, they could more than double those savings by installing a household battery. The report shows that:
- 75,000 home battery units were sold in Australia in 2024, up from 57,000 in 2023, however, only 1 in 3 households and businesses that have rooftop solar also have battery storage.
- Rooftop solar continues to be a key and growing contributor to the nation’s energy mix, with a generation share of 12.4% for all of 2024 (up from 11.2% in 2023 and 6.5% in 2020).
- The total installed capacity of rooftop PV for 2024 was 3 GW from 300,375 units. This complements the 1.1 GW worth of commissioned large-scale generation projects over the same period.
- There are now 185,798 home battery units installed across Australia. In the second half of 2024, 28.4 per cent of rooftop solar installations had an accompanying small-scale battery installed.
- According to the Australian Energy Regulator, in 2024, 27% of customers with rooftop solar exported their energy back into the grid. Those with solar and battery, or those who were able to export their energy back in during peak times, made up only 4%.
- New South Wales had the most battery sales in the second half of 2024 with 14,686. Victoria had 10,996 and Queensland 8,555.
The Clean Energy Council is calling for a national home battery saver program of up to $6,500 per household would help to supercharge battery uptake and see an additional 410,000 batteries installed in homes and small businesses by 2050, equating to 2,054 MW of installed capacity from storage across the National Electricity Market.
